For many of us, overwhelming emotions can make it difficult to maintain composure and respond to difficult situations in a collected and deliberate manner. We feel like emotions take over, and instead of responding calmly, we react impulsively. Over time, we thus experience heightened conflict in relationships and develop unhealthy coping strategies which may provide temporary relief but create longer-term challenges.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based approach that helps people build practical skills to respond more consciously and calmly.
The four core skill areas of DBT are:
🌱 Mindfulness – generating awareness of our thoughts, emotions and experiences without judgement.
🌱 Distress tolerance – learning healthy ways to get through tough situations.
🌱 Emotion regulation – understanding and managing emotions more effectively.
🌱 Interpersonal effectiveness – strengthening relationships, communicating our needs and setting boundaries.
Elements of DBT can be helpful for individuals who experience intense emotions, impulsive behaviours, relationship difficulties, anxiety or depression, or for people who simply want to feel more in control of their emotional responses. Many of these skills are valuable not only during times of crisis but also in everyday situations.
At Strong Minds Counselling, I integrate DBT skills alongside other evidence-based approaches to tailor therapy to your individual needs and goals.
